Playing Favorites

(guest post by Sid)

My sister Laksmi came in January for a three week visit. At one point, we went on a bicycle safari through a beautiful desert park. There were tons of animals, and you can move at your own pace (although the sun was beating down, so you didn't linger too long). During that time, I realized that Laksmi's safari animal is definitely the zebra. She pointed out nearly every single zebra, and took pictures of most.

Look! There, did you see it? What? A Zebra!

Over and over.

Later, when we reviewed all the pictures, half of them were of zebras. Zebras walking. Zebras rolling in the dirt. Zebras drinking water. Baby zebras. Zebras zebras zebras.

It's not her fault though. I really think you too (like everyone else) have a safari animal that you just can't get enough of watching. When you see that animal, you can't help feeling amazed and happy. Maybe you haven't discovered yours yet, but when you do, you'll know.

Laksmi's favorite is obviously a zebra. Mine is a giraffe. I could spend hours sitting there watching them. Melissa insists this is because I look like a giraffe -- tall and gangly. And they are vegetarians and so am I.

But really, I just think they are one of the most interesting animals around. They can eat from the tops of trees. Once we could't even see the giraffe 20 feet away from us, just its legs in the bushes beside us, and its head was hidden in the trees. And of course, having a giraffe around allows me to ask myself silly questions like "if a lion wanted to eat a giraffe, could it even do it?" And watching giraffes run is just so cool.

Alright, so I'm obsessed a little. I even bought Melissa a necklace with a giraffe on it to remind her of me. It's very pretty and she claims to like it, but I have to wonder if she thinks I'm a little giraffe crazy.

I haven't figured out Melissa's safari animal yet, but my bet is on the baboons.

Everyday life in Kenya

I realized that I have gotten so used to being in Africa that I often forgethow amazing and interesting even everyday life can be. In an attempt to be more appreciative, here are a bunch of photos of my everyday life in Kenya!

Around town and at the One Acre Fund offices...

Typical transportation in Kenya...15 mattresses on one bike!

My first overland border crossing! The border between Uganda and Kenya...

Breakdown on the side of the road! It took these guys 10 minutes to fix the problem and we paid them $12. At home it would have taken AAA an hour to even show up!
